Jack Thompson Update

Posted by Dan on December 18, 2008

More craziness in response to our  recent post about the Florida Bar’s announcement on the disciplinary action disbarring Jack Thompson. Thompson had the following comments to say:

<REDACTED ADDRESS/PHONE>

Dear Ms. Downs:

Congratulations on just being elected President-Elect of The Florida Bar today, as you were unopposed. As I understand it, you will be installed into that office this coming June.

Let me tell you what you have to look forward to, as an officer of The Bar:

I will secure a Florida constitutional amendment removing the regulation of the practice of law from the judicial branch and placing it within the Department of Professional and Business Regulation where it belongs with the oversight of every other profession in our state.

Further, The Bar will be successfully sued under the Florida Religious Freedom Restoration Act for its “discipline” of me because of the activist exercise of my Christian faith. Maybe you all can get Steve Chaykin to testify that that was not the case. There are other grounds for this state lawsuit as well, including Florida’s Anti-SLAPP statute.

Finally, you personally are going to have to explain to a jury why The Bar’s Board of Governors, on which you now sit, executed a formal document, dated July 29, 2008, that on its face admits that the Governors covered up the prosecutorial misconduct of Leon County Prosecutor Matt Smith in order to keep an innocent man in jail.

You will rue the day you were elected to this office.

Regards, Jack Thompson

Followed immediately by the following rant:

HEY, BILL, YOU SOUND NERVOUS. HERE’S SOMETHING FOR YOU TO REMEMBER, IF YOU CAN: HE WHO LAUGHS LAST LAUGHS BEST. OH, AND DAVA AIN’T LAUGHING ABOUT THIS, ARE YOU, BILL?

Re: Hearing on Motion to Vacate Referee’s Report

Dear Referee Tunis:

You will either give me a hearing before you on the enclosed Motion to Vacate, or I will get an order making you give me one.

Have a nice day!

Regards, Jack Thompson

Perhaps Jack would have been more successful as a trial attorney if he didn’t take such a demanding, abrasive tone with Florida jurists.

And finally:

Jack Thompson, Once and Future Attorney (Trust Me) wrote:
Petition to amend the Florida Constitution and remove discipline from The Florida Bar, as recommended by the ABA and as done in other states, will be available to the public shortly.

Sweet!

I’ll be laughing my ass off next time I see that on a Florida ballot. I knew there was a reason I still vote in Florida.

  1. Jack Thompson, Once and Future Attorney (Trust Me) Said,

You know, Dan, if you actually had any sense as a journalist, you would ring me up at 305-666-4366, and I’d give you an interview. Your ignorance of what this is all about might be abated. Whether it would be or not, nobody pretending to be engaged in journalistic efforts would do what you do with this topic. How sad. Jack Thompson

  2. Dan Said,

What little you must know of journalism. The story isn’t what you have to say, the story is the way you say it. We’ve heard your side of the story ad nauseum. Why should I need to call you, when I have your words on record? It’s not about what you’re saying, it’s about your reaction.

  3. Dan Said,

I’m curious as to what is editorially inaccurate about my story. 95% of it is your quotes, copied and pasted in full (minus address redactions). My input is as follows: two sentences linking to a previous story, one sentence connecting your first post to the second, one sentence musing on how you take an abrasive and demanding tone with jurists, and two sentences expressing my sentiment that your measures, should they ever make it on the ballot, would likely not pass.

What, pray tell, is journalisticaly or editorially incorrect with my post then? My use of the word “rant?” Merriam Webster defines a rant at ” to talk in a noisy, excited, or declamatory manner”, which you clearly are given the all caps and anankastic nature of your post. My characterization of your tone as demanding and abrasive? It is demanding and abrasive — by definition you are demanding things from the court.

Sorry Jack. If you don’t like the post, you shouldn’t have said the words.

On a personal note, did you ever think that if you stopped making such a public spectacle of yourself, stopped injecting yourself into the public dialog with your antics, you’d be less reviled? If your grievance truly is against the Florida Bar, pursue it quietly and you wouldn’t get the amount of criticism that you get. You only look like an attention-seeker when you continually post on blogs that obviously don’t want you there (I refer here to Jaablog and GamePolitics, not GamesLaw. Spammers excepted, we don’t care who comments here). You are not in a situation where any publicity is good publicity. My personal advice to you is to fight your battle away from the public eye. And keep in mind, I’ve actually defended you in a sense on the gamepolitics forums, condemning people who post there calling you insulting names. But honestly, your signal to noise ratio is approaching theirs at this point.

  4. E. Zachary Knight Said,

    Dan,

Anything that does not support him 100% is ignorance and lacking in journalistic integrity. There is no getting around that. If you had actually studied journalism, you would have known that only positive things can be said about John Bruce.

    ;)

  5. Nightwng2000 Said,

And now, the Traitor John Bruce wants to take his case to SCOTUS.

Which is pretty ironic considering that Gorman the rapist, who the Traitor John Bruce wanted to have freed so that he could save his own career, went to SCOTUS with the exact same demand… and apparently failed.

This does not bode well for the Moot Mental Metropolitan Moron of Miami.
