Business Shortcuts 10-3-08
Posted by Dan on October 4, 2008Today’s shortcuts are all about business.
- Microsoft discusses the possibility of restructuring/merging Rare and Lionhead, idea looks unlikely.
- Tecmo and Koei in merger talks, described as an “issue of survival”.
- Koei/Tecmo to form holding company for stock swap to conduct the tens of billions of yen merger. Profits expected to rise by around 1% for Tecmo, and income expected to rise for 24% for Koei.
- Recent stock market troubles will not effect a possible Tecmo/Koei merger.
- Wednesday’s stock market bounce rallied game industry stocks.
- Srsly. Some stocks (Take Two, for one) gained back MORE than they lost, averages between 5% and 10% of total stock value.
Enjoy!

Situations like Tecmo’s are sad, but unfortunately a growing reality in the game industry. I was just thinking today that it’s always been about making a product and selling it. But now it’s so much more complicated. I grew up with Tecmo and Koei, and I can’t imagine “Tecmo Dynasty Bowl” but I wish them both well.
What, you mean you don’t get as excited as I am for Tecmo Super Bowl starring Zhang Fei, Cao Cao and Liu Bei?
Ironically given my preference for college football over NFL (such as today’s Florida State – Miami rivalry game, distinctively lacking in “wide rights”), instead of watching the actual NFL games, I watch the ongoing Youtube series where some guy makes a CPU v. CPU game in Tecmo Super Bowl, for each week’s NFL matchups.
Haha, actually when I told one of my friends recently that I’d rather play Xbox than watch the Sox game he told me I should get a second TV and act it out in real time on MLB ‘08.
